What Do I Do If My Child Kicks Off The Blanket?

What do I do if my child kicks off the blanket?

Every night, parents and children take part in a silent, ruthless battle. Your child kicks off the blanket and you go there to put it back. Together you create a vicious circle that lasts all night while you try to rest.

It is a tiring struggle where the parents are afraid of the possible negative effects the cold can have on the child during the night. Because no matter what you do, the child always wins – that is, it will spend the whole night on top of the blanket.

Your baby’s pajamas are not enough to keep the baby warm, so you turn to blankets, blankets and bedspreads, all of which end up at the foot end while your baby lies at the opposite end with his stomach exposed.

So how should we react when a child kicks off the blanket? What can we do?

Why they do it is a fundamental question, especially when we go to extreme lengths to cover them with blankets. Of course, your child kicks off the blanket because it is too hot under all these layers.

Remember that children usually feel less cold than adults at night. Adding lots of blankets at night will thus not make it more comfortable, but only contribute to a suffocating, warm feeling.

Children with bare legs

The first step is to observe the baby before you become anxious that it is not wearing a blanket. Look at her skin, her hair; touch her pajamas on her back and feel the pillow.

Are they wet? It is important to observe if your child is sweating and find out if she is as cold as you think. By the way, do you know why children get that barking cough sometimes? It’s not because of the cold, but because it’s too hot.

It comes as no surprise that a quick fix for this cough is to take the baby out into the fresh air to reduce the swelling of the vocal cords.

Also remember that children have very active sleep patterns, which means that they have a tendency to move quite a lot in bed because they weigh very little and can practically lie down anyway and still fit.

The fact that they twist and turn makes it very likely that they will not remain under the covers all night.

Finally, it may also be that your child kicks off the blanket on purpose because she is not comfortable with a super warm pajamas under a thick layer of blankets that weigh down and make her sweat.

Baby in sleeping bag
  • Do not overdo blankets and the like. You should not wrap your baby in duvets as it may make her sweat, causing her to move and free herself from them. Also remember that children usually sweat during the first phase of sleep, and you definitely do not want them to do so and then get cold.
  • Cover your baby with the right amount of blankets during the first sleep phase. It is not a bad idea to put your child to bed but blankets first. When he has finished sweating, you can then cover him as needed.
  • Can you avoid covering the child with a blanket completely? It is an excellent but somewhat unusual method for very restless children who kick off the blanket no matter what you do. You should of course make sure in advance that the pajamas are warm enough for the child to be able to sleep on top of the blanket without getting cold. This way you will avoid abrupt temperature differences.
  • In the case of restless babies, you can turn to the old trick with the sleeping bag. That way, your child will not be able to “escape”. There are special sleeping bags for older children that leave their feet exposed, so that they can easily move and feel more comfortable.
  • Look for products on the market that can help you. You may discover methods that are very effective in preventing the child from kicking off the blanket. For example, there are clips that are similar to those that hold the sheets in place, or you can find blankets that are similar to sleeping bags.
  • Large blankets – a good strategy. Another option is to use sheets or blankets that are larger than the bed and fold them under the mattress or bed frame. Do this on both sides to keep the baby covered all night.
